Italian Wine, Castles and Sea

It’s time to leave the Baltics for a while as I again find myself overwhelmed with a flow of experiences that leaves me with the enviable task of choosing from among a series of adventures and locations, all which merit far more than one of my short posts to do them justice.

Not bad.... not bad at all...

I’m scribbling this post down as I look out on a lovely Italian garden in Genoa, where I’ve had a full schedule of touring the Italian Riviera, eating gelato and taking long walks along the sea.  While Italy has always been one of my favorite countries to visit, this trip is a particular treat as I’m getting a personal tour from  friend and great travel blogger Giulia (check out her own post on the area at Travel Reportage).  When you get to be shown a country by someone paid to take photos and write about travel, you know something in your life is going right.

The base for this trip Continue reading

Another Our of the Way Place

“What do you do?” I’ve always found it a little depressing that the expected answer to this very open question is a career or at least a job of some sort. I do lots of things. To to define myself as a writer (or even worse a lawyer) seems to be doing a huge part of my inner-being an injustice.

Be that as it may, there are certain activities that I enjoy and that I’ve dedicated a lot of time to, among them photography. After trying to look at my blog with a pair of fresh eyes, it occurred to me that while I like “An Out of the Way Place” as a blog, it isn’t really the ideal showcase for my photography.

I confess this photo of Venice has nothing to do with this post, but I know how you guys love pictures.

I confess this photo of Venice has nothing to do with this post, but I know how you all love pictures.

So in response I decided to make a little experiment and after a little searching found some online tools to generate what I hope will be a nice showcase for my artwork. It’s still a work in progress, but if you’re interested you can see it now at https://anoutofthewayplace.jux.com/

I’m not sure that’s a permanent design or location and would love to hear all of your thoughts on what I’ve done so far, so leave a comment below!

Details of Burano

Next up: a screenplay.  Unlike most of my recent adventures, my current challenge involves sitting in one place for the better part of a month.  I’ve agreed to write a screenplay for a director I know and the time to delivery is a scant one month.  That means long nights of staring at my little screen with beady, red eyes.

Green and Purple

Fortunately I have accumulated quite a back log of places to write about so I can still share some beautiful out of the way places I’ve been to recently.  Take Burano for instance Continue reading

A Past Trip

When I parted ways with career, money and home a few years back, I already had a love of travel.  That means I have a huge backlog of photos and stories that have never made it up to this blog, but that I’d love to share with you.  Take this photo for instance:

To think they didn’t even have power tools…

I captured this shot on one of my many trips to Rome, one of my favorite cities.  This is the ceiling of Continue reading

Floating City

The weeks of travel I had first planned have now turned into years.  Friends and strangers often ask me if I get tired from all the traveling.  I don’t know if I get tired, but there are times when I feel one part of my life has been neglected at the expense of another. A life of continuous travel, constantly surround by new friends and new places, makes balance a rarely achieved ideal.  As a result I’ve found my mind hungering for stimulation and challenge, something more satisfying than the small plaques that adorn displays in museums, more involved than the writing of a one-page post.

To find the time for this concentration and reflection I sought out a place to settle for a while.  Of course homelessness makes Continue reading
